Watch: Jack White blows stuff up in explosive ‘Lazaretto’ video

There was a time when the sight of Jack White smashing a disco ball, as the garage-rock star does near the end of his new music video, would’ve felt like a visual metaphor for the grumpy anti-technology stance White once seemed to embody.

Not anymore.

In the clip for “Lazaretto,” posted early Wednesday on YouTube, the destruction of that mirrored orb is just one bit of rigorously art-directed mayhem; indeed, it’s followed by the image of White’s precious guitar exploding even as he strums away.

The title track from White’s second solo album, due out Tuesday but streaming now on iTunes, “Lazaretto” itself makes clear that he’s abandoned whatever fear of funk he may once have harbored: With a fuzzed-out death-disco bass line and spacey synth textures straight out of “Genius of Love,” this is basically White’s appealingly freaky version of body-moving music.

Less online apologizing and more of this, please.
