Did Chris Brown blow his chance at a redemption song at last year’s Grammys?

Brown attracted a hail of criticism after he was allowed to perform twice during the awards ceremony, his first appearance since 2009 -- when he missed the show after his arrest on suspicion of felony assault on his then-girlfriend Rihanna.

Ken Erlich, executive producer of the Grammys, defended the move last year: “We’re glad to have him back,” Erlich said after the performance by Brown, who also won a Grammy that night for best R&B; album for “F.A.M.E.” “I think people deserve a second chance, you know.”

But some performers and many in the Twitter universe disagreed, calling Brown a “wife beater” and other names. Many complained that Brown did not display remorse. And several missteps since then -- including Twitter rants and a foul-mouthed feud with a comedian, a violent meltdown backstage at “Good Morning America,” a leaked nude photo and an apparent reconciliation with Rihanna -- have further tarnished Brown’s reputation.

Erlich, who addressed television writers at the winter session of the Television Critics Assn. was more mum about Brown. “I’m not going to say what my personal feelings are,” he said when asked about Brown’s Grammy and post-Grammy behavior.

Though he noted that other performers who have had problems legal and otherwise have been allowed to perform at the Grammys, he declined to say whether he thought Brown had redeemed himself.

As to whether Brown will be performing at this year’s ceremony, Erlich said no decision had yet been made.
