LAPD cruiser crashes while pursuing DUI suspect; no officers hurt

A police cruiser crashed into a median early Tuesday in Van Nuys while pursuing a man suspected of driving under the influence, authorities said.
Los Angeles police officers began pursuing the man on Sherman Way around 1:50 a.m. after observing him running stop signs and driving without headlights, authorities said. He continued to drive recklessly after the pursuit began, police said.
During the pursuit, the police cruiser crashed into a median on Sherman Way east of Firmament Avenue, disabling the car. No officers were injured in the collision.
The driver eventually stopped for another responding squad car but fled on foot. A passenger in the car cooperated with officers and was not arrested, police said.
A K-9 unit was brought in and the driver was found around 5 a.m. near the intersection of Sherman Way and Sepulveda Boulevard and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The suspect, whose name was not immediately released, is on probation for felony narcotics charges, police said.
