NTSB begins probe into plane crash near Big Bear airport

Federal transportation officials are headed to San Bernardino National Forest to investigate a plane crash near Big Bear airport Thursday afternoon.
Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to begin surveying the wreckage and interviewing witnesses Friday, an NTSB official said. The agency investigates all aviation crashes.
In a typical NTSB inquiry, a preliminary report that provides an outline of the facts of the crash is released about two weeks after the investigation begins. A conclusive report can take as long as 18 months to complete.
According to forest officials, the small plane crashed about 12 miles west of the airport at about 2:10 p.m. at Highway 18 near Arctic Circle and Glory Ridge Road. The plane’s passengers survived the wreck and the pilot called emergency responders, who found the crash site and airlifted the plane’s three passengers to a local hospital, KTLA reported.
