Man gets 26 years for killing his mother and burying her in backyard

A 30-year-old man was sentenced Thursday to 26 years to life in prison for killing his mother and burying her body in the yard of the rented condominium they shared.
A jury convicted John Taylor Huynh of Rosemead in March of stabbing his mother, Hong Tu Phuong, to death, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
He was arrested on May 20, 2011, after he walked into the Alhambra Police Department and told officers he killed his mother in 2001, prosecutors said.
Police found her remains buried in a shallow grave in the backyard of the condominium.
Huynh testified that he moved out of the condominium a week after killing his mother and gave excuses about her whereabouts, telling people she had moved to Vietnam or died of cancer, prosecutors said.
