Water main breaks in Koreatown; some traffic lanes closed

A 30-inch water main broke Thursday afternoon in Koreatown, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power announced.
The break, at 6th Street and Vermont Avenue, has caused lane closures: Two northbound lanes of Vermont are shut, as all eastbound lanes of 6th from New Hampshire Avenue to Vermont, DWP spokesman Albert Rodriguez said.
“Avoid the area.... Traffic will be a mess!” the Los Angeles Police Department’s Rampart Division warned drivers on Twitter.
Rodriguez said crews were on site to fix the main, which is expected to be finished around 8 p.m.
“It’s embedded in the asphalt,” he said. “The crews have to get out there and cut away that portion of the asphalt, lift it up, and either replace that section or seal it up.... And then they have to put new asphalt over it.”
A 30-inch water main is “sizable,” Rodriguez said, adding that most mains underneath residences are either 10 or 30 inches.
