A standoff with Whittier police that lasted more than 12 hours ended early Friday morning after a man surrendered and his alleged hostage was freed unharmed from inside an apartment.
The incident concluded peacefully about 4:22 a.m., Whittier Police Officer Brad White told KTLA.
Police were called to the complex in the 7900 block of Bright Avenue about 4 p.m., officials said.
When officers arrived, White said, they saw windows being broken out of the complex and a conflict between a man and a woman inside.
A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department SWAT team was called to the scene, and a crisis negotiator spoke with the man before the barricade situation ended.
Police said they believed the man may have been armed with a knife or a gun at the time, but it was not immediately clear if a weapon was recovered.
The woman who had reportedly been taken hostage “is all right,” White said. “She came out first and she is being checked out by paramedics.”
