L.A. Votes: Endorsements and ethics complaints

Since winning a spot in the runoff, mayoral candidates Wendy Greuel and Eric Garcetti have spent much of their time rolling out new endorsements. But how much do these endorsements matter? The Times looks at how the backers, including a former president, a basketball great and an assortment of elected officials, could affect the candidates’ prospects in the May 21 election.

The mayoral candidates were relatively quiet over the weekend. On Saturday, Garcetti rallied supporters in San Pedro, a community Greuel won by six points during the primary.

Meanwhile, the candidates for city attorney have been fiercely questioning each other’s ethics. Incumbent Carmen Trutanich and challenger Mike Feuer filed dueling complaints in recent days, with the current city attorney accusing Feuer of improperly obtaining $300,000 in taxpayer funds by hiding the true cost of his campaign. Feuer responded by lodging a pair of complaints, including one that alleged that Trutanich violated rules by sending an email newsletter during a special campaign blackout period for incumbents. Both candidates deny wrongdoing.

Today, candidates for city council, city attorney and city controller will meet to discuss the environment, transportation and the economy at an event sponsored by the local chapter of the League of Conservation Voters and others. A live-stream of the seven-hour forum can be seen here.
