Opponents of same-sex marriage blast court ruling on Prop. 8

SACRAMENTO -- Opponents of same-sex marriage in California are unsure of their next step after Wednesday’s ruling from the country’s highest court invalidated Proposition 8.
“The U.S. Supreme Court has done the work of the homosexual activist agenda,” said Randy Thomasson, president of the conservative organization Save California.
Flanked by supporters outside the Capitol in Sacramento, he blasted state leaders and judges as “outlaws” for failing to uphold Proposition 8, which halted same-sex marriage in California when it was approved by voters in 2008.
“The U.S. Supreme Court has failed us, as Jerry Brown and Kamala Harris has failed us,” he said.
Thomasson added, “You are seeing tyranny, not democracy.”
Gov. Jerry Brown and California Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris, both supporters of same-sex marriage, had refused to defend Proposition 8 in court.
That became an important factor in the Supreme Court’s decision, which was written by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr.
“We have never before upheld the standing of a private party to defend the constitutionality of a state statute when state officials have chosen not to,” he said. “We decline to do so for the first time here.”
