Re “Morsi’s hateful speech,” Editorial, Jan. 16
Your editorial calling on Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi to apologize for describing Zionists as “descendants of apes and pigs” is only half right. We are all descendants of apes, more or less.
Morsi is to be congratulated for embracing the theory of evolution at a time when so many of our own Christian leaders reject it. No apology is necessary there; it’s the pigs that are the problem.

I am pleased that The Times and President Obama have condemned Morsi’s bigoted comments. These outrageous comments, however, are no surprise. Some like them appear in Hamas’ charter.
Is this what we get from the Arab Spring that was lauded by the Obama administration and much of the mainstream media?
Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood have come to power representing the majority of Egyptians. It is not a fringe group but rather the future of the Middle East, and we need to be prepared to deal with it.
Mere condemnation with words is not going to do it. We need leadership in Washington and Europe, and it doesn’t look like we are going to see it any time soon.
