Re “L.A. restaurateur elevated burgers,” Obituary, June 11

During the years the late actor Harry Lewis’ family owned it, Hamburger Hamlet was a great place for people of all ages to eat and celebrate.

In 1957, at the end of a successful shopping trip to buy a dress for my first Communion, my mother took me to the restaurant in Westwood Village. My seven-year-old self was intrigued by the single-portion, cheese-encrusted, deep-dish apple pie. As a teenager and later as a young adult, I would go with my friends to one of the Valley locations to chow down after the movies.

In ways they probably never imagined, the Lewises built — and fed — community.
