Readers React: Midterm election’s biggest loser: the planet

To the editor: Hedge-fund billionaire Tom Steyer spent $74 million to bring climate change to the forefront of the political debate. Even though his contributions yielded “little payoff,” still he says, “I feel great.” (“Tom Steyer gets little payoff for millions spent on green issues,” Nov. 5)

Steyer points to the growing number of people forming organizations that have long-term strategies for improving planetary health. Alone, we cannot avert the dangers of global warming. Sadly, Congress has chosen to use its collective power as a “history stopper.”

Thankfully, several persistent, strategic citizen groups are using their collective energy to be “history makers.”

To the editor: Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), who considers climate change a hoax, probably will chair the Environment and Public Works Committee. Not even Steyer was a match for the dark money that came from the other side.

The sorrow in all this is that for the next two years — years that might be crucial for the environment — power now lies with those who would bleed the Earth to death.
