Readers React: How David Lamb helped his readers understand the Middle East

To the editor: My parents lived in Egypt from 1982-84 as part of an aid project to increase cereal grain production. Times reporter David Lamb was stationed in the area at the time and I would send copies of his articles to my folks. (“David Lamb, longtime L.A. Times correspondent who covered Vietnam War, dies at 76,” June 6)
Particularly then, but even now, most Americans did not understand the way of thinking in that part of the world. My parents loved their Egyptian friends and coworkers and were thrilled that Lamb always got their perspective right.
When his book “The Arabs” came out, I bought two copies, one for my parents and one for my family (we were fortunate to be able to visit my folks and spend three weeks in that beautiful, amazing, mysterious country). Lamb graciously signed them for me. Anyone who wants a better understanding of that part of the world should read his book and articles.
Lamb was really special. It is sad to lose him.
