Sport celebrities, business people and community members joined

parents and staff members from the Huntington Beach City School District

at the “Touchdown for Technology” fund-raiser sponsored by the Huntington

Beach Educational Foundation.

Former Rams quarterback Vince Ferragamo and two-time Olympic softball

gold medalist Laura Berg were among those at the Nov. 20 dinner and

silent auction at the Meadowlark Clubhouse.

During halftime of the “Monday Night Football” game featuring the St.

Louis Rams and the Washington Redskins, Perry Cain, manager of government

and community relations for Boeing Co., surprised foundation President

Suzanne Beukema with a $15,000 grant from Boeing.

The silent auction included items donated by local businesses and

staff members from all 10 of the district’s elementary schools.

Proceeds will benefit students through teacher mini-grants and the

awarding of annual school technology funds.

Coastline to offer online math class

Coastline Community College will offer the course, Fundamentalist of

Math, online as well as in the classroom. Additional information is

College gets funds for variety of programs

Coastline Community College received almost $2 million in grants. One

five-year grant of $350,000 will be used to improve the college’s

infrastructure, programs, virtual library system and staff development

opportunities. Other grants will go toward developing online courses and

creating programs for students trying to earn a two-year degree in 14

months.

Audiovisual technology online class available

Coastline Community College has a new online program to prepare

skilled technicians in audiovisual communication. The first course in the

program, Introduction to Audiovisual Technology, is already available to

students through the Internet. It provides an overview of the audiovisual

industry and prepares students with technological proficiency. In

addition, it offers specific technical fields within the industry,

High school district receives reading grant

The Huntington Beach Union High School District has received a

$147,000 California Reading Standards and Interventions Grant. Each high

school has a voluntary reading committee coordinated by a reading

organizer, designed to support the importance of reading in all subject

areas.

Campus improvements, repairs are planned

Next year, construction and repair work will begin at five high

schools in the Huntington Beach Union High School District. Funded by

$42.5 million in state bond funds, the repair program will allow for

limited, but essential improvements. At Huntington Beach High, plans are

nearly ready for work on electrical upgrades and wiring for the Digital

High School program, handicap accessibility, re-roofing, classroom air

quality and restroom renovations. A task force has begun meeting at

Fountain Valley High to address the best way to relocated classes housed

in Building No. 300.
