The schools playing for a Southern Section Division 1 baseball championship on Saturday, Newhall Hart (20-9-1) and Huntington Beach (24-8), are following that old saying, “It’s not how you start that’s important, but how you finish.”
Hart lost six consecutive games in March and was 2-6 to start the season. Huntington Beach started 2-5. Hart has a nine-game winning streak. Huntington Beach has won 15 of its last 16. The teams square off at 7:30 p.m. at San Manuel Stadium in San Bernardino, one of four championship games at the site.
No. 2-seeded Huntington Beach has a strong hitting attack, led by UCLA-bound outfielder Daniel Amaral, the Sunset League’s most valuable player. UCLA-bound pitcher Jack Ralston will start for Hart, which has a hot hitter in junior catcher Robert Reeves.
The Division 2 game between Mission Viejo and Chino Hills is set for 4 p.m. and features an outstanding pitching matchup of USC-bound Patrick Sandoval against UC Santa Barbara-bound Bailey Falter.
In Division 3, Walnut will play Redondo at 1 p.m. In Division 4, Phelan Serrano will face South Torrance at 10 a.m.
