Baseball: Jack Flaherty strikes out 12 in season debut

Harvard-Westlake right-hander is impressive in season debut

There were more than 20 pro scouts at O’Malley Family Field on Tuesday to watch the season debut of Harvard-Westlake pitcher Jack Flaherty and Westlake shortstop Luke Dykstra.
Flaherty came through with an impressive performance, striking out 12, walking none and allowing two infield singles in six innings of Harvard-Westlake’s 8-0 victory. Dykstra went hitless in two official at-bats. Sophomore Cameron Deere went three for three with two RBIs. Jackson Grayson and Michael Vokulich added two hits apiece.
Calabasas gave first-year Coach Thomas Cassidy something to remember about in his debut, upsetting No. 4-ranked Loyola, 3-2, in eight innings. Tyler Howell threw seven innings for the Coyotes to outduel Stanford-bound Quinn Brodey. The Coyotes beat UCLA-bound Nathan Hadley, getting a game-winning RBI from Charlie Fischer. Jake Baer had two RBIs.
Left-hander Kurt Johnson of Royal struck out the first nine batters he faced and finished with 13 strikeouts in Royal’s 1-0 win over Glendale. Brandon Sporito had the only RBI in the second inning.
Senior left-hander Gabe Grancolas threw a complete-game three-hitter in Santa Barbara’s 2-0 win over Pioneer Valley. He struck out five and walked none. There were 10 infield groundouts.
Sherman Oaks Notre Dame routed Ventura, 11-0. Graham Mekjian threw five no-hit innings. Jordan Myrow went two for two. Chris Colarossi had three hits and three RBIs.
No. 9 Hart defeated No. 23 El Camino Real, 5-1. Chad Haslock threw a four-hitter. Dayton Provost, Nick Valaika and Jack Ralston each had two hits.
No. 25 Chatsworth received six shutout innings from Josh Garcia in a 4-0 win over No. 14 Agoura. Anthony Mayorga had an RBI double and had two RBIs for the Chancellors.
In Simi Valley’s 18-0 win over Oak Park, Austin Fields and Robert Stephan each had three hits and Lorenzo Perez and Matt Campbell each hit home runs.
Saugus defeated Palmdale, 11-4. Roy Verdejo had three doubles and three RBIs. Moorpark defeated Crespi, 5-1. Patrick Valdez hit a home run.
Campbell Hall defeated Culver City, 2-1. Ethan Miller threw five innings and allowed three hits. Jesse Shatsky and Charles Goldring each had two hits. Viewpoint defeated Leuzinger, 16-1. Thomas Sprague had three hits.
Oaks Christian defeated Burroughs, 6-4. Chris Davis hit a three-run home run and finished with three hits. Riley Helland hit a two-run home run.
Sierra Canyon defeated St. Monica 10-5. Sophomore Alex Crane went three for three with two doubles and a triple. Freshman Zach Tavelman also had three hits and two RBIs.
Hoover defeated Eastside, 8-0. Junior Jonathan Ramos allowd one hit in four innings. Malibu defeated San Marino, 4-2, in nine innings. Nick Anthony had a two-run double in the ninth.
Mission Viejo got a two-run home run from Tyler Clark in a 3-2 win over Edison. Patrick Sandoval struck out four in five innings. Buena defeated St. Bonaventure, 4-0. Charlie Brooks threw a one-hitter. Rio Mesa defeated Quartz Hill, 4-3. Dana Hills defeated Paramount, 1-0. Millikan and Capistrano Valley tied, 4-4.
Brian Gadbsy struck out 10 in Crescenta Valley’s 19-0 win over La Canada.
