Boys’ basketball: Granada Hills upsets El Camino Real on Michael Kalu’s three

On the final night of regular season City Section basketball action, Granada Hills’ Michael Kalu came through with the shot of the night. He made a three-point shot with four seconds left to give the Highladners a 53-52 victory over defending Division I champion El Camino Real. It ended the Conquistadores’ 33-game win streak in West Valley League play.

“It’s a miracle we actually executed a play at the end,” Granada Hills Coach Don Loperena said. “It’s so great seeing these guys improve.”

Granada Hills (18-12, 7-3) received 16 points from Travis Fukumoto. Brandon Russell had 17 points for El Camino Real (19-7, 9-1). The loss could impact the Open Division playoff seedings when decided on Saturday. El Camino Real was considered a likely No. 2 seed.

Taft finished second in the West Valley League with a 79-55 win over Chatsworth. Damian Wilson and Darrius Henderson each had 14 points and Travis Patrick 12.

Fairfax won a share of the Western League title with a 60-38 win over Palisades. Donald Gipson scored 16 points and Lindsey Drew had 13 points and 11 rebounds. University defeated LACES, 76-73. Cushan Allen scored 21 points and Gabe Okmin 20. Nick Brooks added 18 points.

North Hollywood upset East Valley League champion Poly, 77-72. Sean Fernandez scored 29 points. Cesar Reyes had 23 points for Poly and Jose Esqueda 21. Verdugo Hills defeated Arleta, 72-60. Adrian Gutierrez scored 24 points.

Sylmar won the Valley Mission League championship with a 67-45 win over Kennedy.

In the Coliseum League, Crenshaw defeated Manual Arts, 67-42.

In the Northern League, Marshall won its third league title in the last five years with a 56-29 win over Eagle Rock.

In a Gold Coast League consolation game, Campbell Hall defeated Brentwood, 70-56. Aaron Holiday scored 23 points.
