Football: Chaminade prepares for Pac-5 debut

Chaminade Coach Ed Croson knows what awaits the Eagles in their first year of playing in the Pac-5 Division and in a revamped Mission League.

There will be no more taking showers at halftime of a rout or tweeting on the sideline because the game is out of reach. Every week will be a challenge, and the Eagles held an intrasquad scrimmage on Thursday night trying to move forward in the post-Brad Kaaya era.

Quarterbacks Ed Sias and Dymond Lee took turns running the offense. Lee has option skills. Sias, an A student, has more of the Kaaya style, making quick passes. Both will be hard pressed to equal Kaaya, who’s competing for the starting position at Miami as a freshman. Croson isn’t asking the quarterback to win games. It’s a job of putting the team in position to win by limiting mistakes.

Chaminade’s strength could be its running game, aided by three returning line starters, headed by 6-foot-6 Bar Milo, who has a lot more energy and is quite feisty playing at 280 pounds.

Freshman T.J. Pledger had a 70-yard touchdown run. Croson will have to find a way to get him the ball as the season progresses. J.T. Hill and Okalani Taufahema-Langi have more experienced than Pledger, but beware. The freshman is a player.

Chaminade opens its season on Aug. 28 against Venice on the road.
