Walk-on coaches reaches 73% statewide

In a disturbing trend that sees no sign of reversing, 73% of high school coaches in California are walk-ons, according to CIF Executive Director Roger Blake.
That statistic comes from last year’s survey of schools.
The continuing rise of walk-ons is blamed on fewer teacher openings for coaches; the decision of many schools to get rid of sixth period for coaching teams; the low pay for coaching stipends.
