Former Dodgers GM Dan Evans to interview for Angels job

The Angels have begun narrowing the field in their search for a general manager.

Former Dodgers general manager Dan Evans is scheduled to interview with the team Thursday or Friday. Also, the Angels are expected to receive permission to interview Thad Levine, assistant general manager of the Texas Rangers, after the World Series.

New York Yankees executive Damon Oppenheimer, who was interviewed last week in Florida, was told he is no longer in the running, according to people familiar with the search who are not authorized to speak publicly on the topic.

The Angels also interviewed Billy Eppler, the Yankees’ senior director of pro personnel. Eppler has reportedly been called back for a second interview.

Tampa Bay General Manager Andrew Friedman, 34, appears to be the leading candidate. However, he is extremely loyal to Rays owner Stuart Sternberg, and the Angels do not seem to have much confidence that they can coax him to Anaheim.

In addition to Friedman and Eppler, the Angels have formally interviewed Kim Ng, former Dodgers assistant general manager; Jerry Dipoto, Arizona’s senior vice president for scouting and player development; Rick Hahn, Chicago White Sox assistant general manager, and Omar Minaya, former New York Mets general manager.

Trumbo gets award

Angels first baseman Mark Trumbo was selected American League rookie of the year by the Sporting News.

Trumbo, 25, hit .254 with a team-leading 29 home runs and 89 runs batted in.

Atlanta Braves closer Craig Kimbrel, who had 46 saves and a 2.10 earned-run average, was selected National League rookie of the year by the publication. Voting was done by 289 major league players, 177 in the AL and 112 in the NL.
