Santa Barbara’s Kevin Gowdy is taken No. 42 overall by Phillies in MLB draft

It’s a new round, but the same result.
With the first pick of the Major League Baseball draft’s second round, the Philadelphia Phillies picked a Southern California high school player committed to UCLA. Again.
This time, the Phillies went with Kevin Gowdy a right-hander from Santa Barbara High with the No. 42 overall pick.
Gowdy is the third UCLA signee selected on the first day. Center fielder Mickey Moniak was taken first overall by the Phillies, and outfielder Blake Rutherford was selected No. 18 by the New York Yankees.
Gowdy, who is 6 feet 4 and 175 lbs, throws a fastball that tops out at 94 mph, with a slider and smooth mechanics.
He played on the USA 18U team that won a gold medal last fall in Japan.
