Jered Weaver, Hank Conger pace Angels in 9-3 rout of Blue Jays

Reporting from TORONTO — For the first time in two years, the Angels are two games above .500.

Jered Weaver won his fourth consecutive decision and Hank Conger drove in a career-high five runs to spark the Angels to a 9-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday.

The Angels go for a four-game series sweep on Monday. In the first three games of the series, each starting pitcher got into the seventh inning. The three starters -- Weaver, Garrett Richards and Tyler Skaggs -- combined to give up five earned runs in 21 1/3 innings on 13 hits and four walks with 15 strikeouts.

The Angels (19-17) won for the eighth time in 12 games.

Weaver is 4-0 with a 1.73 earned-run average in his last five starts. He gave up two hits, one walk and one run in the first six innings -- Jose Reyes accounted for the run when he scored from second base on a ground ball to second -- then left after giving up two hits and one walk in the seventh inning. Michael Kohn, who inherited the bases-loaded, one-out jam, got a pop fly and strikeout to end the threat.

The Angels scored twice in the fourth inning, on back-to-back doubles by Efren Navarro and Conger. In his first two major league games this season, Navarro has four hits - three of them doubles -- in eight at-bats.

In the fifth inning, Mike Trout doubled home a run. Trout struck out in his other four at-bats. In May, he is batting .118 with 12 strikeouts in 34 at-bats.

The Angels added four runs in the sixth inning, three on a home run by Conger and another on a triple by Ian Stewart. The hit snapped an 0-for-24 skid by Stewart.

Stewart now has three triples, tied for the major league lead and tied for his career high. Conger also singled home a run in the ninth inning; his five RBIs in a game was the first by an Angels catcher since Bobby Wilson in 2010.

For the first time this season, Toronto’s Jose Bautista did not reach base. His 37-game streak to start the season was the longest in the majors since Albert Pujols started the 2008 season with a 41-game streak for the St. Louis Cardinals.
