Former USC coach Steve Sarkisian’s job at Alabama isn’t lucrative

Steve Sarkisian’s position as an analyst for top-ranked Alabama isn’t exactly lucrative.

According to public records, Alabama paid the former USC head coach $2,916.67 last month. That works out to about $35,000 a year — much less than Sarkisian made in an average week coaching the Trojans.

Alabama hired Sarkisian for the advisory role in September. He made $2,651.62 for working part of the month. Sarkisian can’t coach players on the field because of NCAA limits on staff size, but the job provided a path back to football after USC fired him in October 2015 for alcohol-related issues and erratic behavior.

Sarkisian’s contract with USC called for a base salary of $2.6 million in 2015 plus an additional $1 million as part of a marketing agreement. The contract included several financial incentives for on-field performance and academics.

The 42-year-old is still in a legal fight with USC over his dismissal. Sarkisian sued the school last December in Los Angeles Superior Court seeking more than $12 million remaining on his contract. The case was sent to binding arbitration — keeping the matter out of public view — per a clause in Sarkisian’s contract.

Sarkisian’s Dallas-based attorney, Alan Loewinsohn, said Tuesday that he didn’t have an update on the proceeding.

A hearing on the matter is scheduled for January.
