What’s tops for Memorial Day? NYC and L.A. lead -- get this! -- Vegas

For the third straight year, New York City grabs the top spot, with L.A. coming in fourth and Las Vegas at No. 10, on Travelocity’s 2014 list of top 10 Memorial Day destinations, which was released Monday.

But in the Big Apple don’t expect to meet the locals. “Memorial Day is when New Yorkers raise the white flag and start fleeing the city ahead of the invading horde — of tourists,” the New York Daily News says.

Based on the online travel website’s booking data, here’s the full list of 2014 destinations along with average price of round-trip airfares from all over the U.S.:
1. New York City ($328)
2. South Florida, meaning Miami and Fort Lauderdale ($340)
3. Washington, D.C. ($350)
4. Los Angeles ($447)
5. Orlando ($318)
6. Chicago ($317)
7. Boston ($311)
8. San Francisco Bay Area ($361)
9. Seattle ($350)
10. Las Vegas ($375)

For those keeping score, places gaining in popularity over Travelocity’s 2013 list include L.A., which moved up from No. 6, and Boston, which advanced from No. 10. Orlando dropped from the No. 2 spot last year, replaced by the beachy Miami and Fort Lauderdale crowd.

What makes New York City a Memorial Day magnet? Maybe it’s to watch the free screening of “Top Gun” on Friday night at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum or to go to the free New York Philharmonic concert Monday evening at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine (first come, first served).

And of course on Monday there are the Little Neck-Douglaston Parade in Queens and the Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade.
