Janice Crowther and Dave Prewett, near the ruins of a neighbor’s house at Chum Creek, were among Australians who stayed to fight the firestorms. “Initially, there was smoke and that’s what alerted us to go outside and have a look,” Prewett told AFP. They were met with a terrifying sight: “fires burning 360 degrees around us,” he said. “I hopped up on the roof to see it coming through the paddocks, I could see the glow coming down from the mountains, it was really scary. Like the roar of a jet engine.” (Willian West / AFP / Getty Images)
