Mustang Relays : At the Tape, It’s Vista High’s Eager Again : She Outleans Torrey Pines’ Nugent to Win Invitational Mile

ENCINITAS — For the second consecutive week, Vista High School distance runner Robin Eager provided most of the excitement at a county track invitational.
Last Saturday, Eager ran away from Torrey Pines’ Nicole Nugent to win the two-mile in a county-best time of 11:18.6 in the Tiger Relays at Morse.
This time Eager outleaned Nugent at the tape to win the girls’ invitational mile Saturday in the Mustang Relays at San Dieguito.
It appeared for a while that Nugent was about to avenge last week’s defeat. After Eager and Poway’s Jennifer Sheflo set the pace for three laps, Nugent exploded past the two and opened a 10-yard lead.
“I heard her coming up behind me,” Eager said. “All of a sudden she took off and I said, ‘uh-oh.’ ”
Eager slowly pulled away from Sheflo but was unable to close ground on the leader.
“The last 150 yards I had my doubts,” Eager said. “On the turn I didn’t think I had her at all, but I decided what the heck.”
Similar to the burst of speed Nugent showed in assuming the lead, Eager erased Nugent’s 10-yard lead in the final stretch and passed the Torrey Pines sophomore in the final strides. Eager, a junior, finished in 5:19.4 on San Dieguito’s dirt track. Nugent was listed at 5:19.7, although the finish appeared to be closer. Sheflo finished third in 5:24.8.
Eager may have won one of the most exciting races, but she was not the lone standout Saturday. Mount Carmel’s Lesley Noll was named the outstanding athlete of the meet after running a meet record 2:18.91 in the girls’ invitational 880.
Noll attacked the two laps from the opening gun. She opened a 20-yard lead on the first turn and never let up. Again, Sheflo, who finished in 2:24.44, was doing the chasing.
“I don’t know how to run the 880,” Noll said. “I’m just learning how to do it.”
Noll most often runs the 400, in which she has the county’s best mark this season at 59.0.
Three Mount Carmel pole vaulters combined for a meet record 42-feet. Eric Bean jumped 14-feet 6-inches, Scott Johnston 14-0 and Steve Whitton 13-6.
Hilltop’s Ellis del Sol emerged from a strong field to win the boys’ invitational mile in 4:18.87. Point Loma’s David Rees, the winner of the prep mile at the Michelob Invitational last month, finished second in 4:22.75.
Del Sol and Rees went to the lead at the start of the third lap, but Rees could not close the 10-yard lead del Sol held during the final laps.
San Dieguito’s Travis Knox didn’t disappoint the home crowd as he equaled his best mark of the season in winning the invitational 120-yard high hurdles in 14.53.
