Burton Brothers, Coombs Are Aztecs’ Top Freshman Football Prospects

Twin brothers and a linebacker whose team didn’t lose a game during his junior and senior years of high school comprise the San Diego contingent of incoming freshmen football players at San Diego State.

Tight end Mitch Burton of El Capitan High caught 23 passes for 307 yards and 1 touchdown and rushed for 135 yards on 18 carries as a wingback for the Vaqueros last season. The 6-foot 3-inch, 225-pound receiver was also a three-time letterman in basketball and track.

“He’s getting stronger, he has excellent hands, and he’s extremely fluid,” said Brian Billick, SDSU recruiting coordinator and receiving coach.

His brother, Brad, is five minutes older, one inch taller and 15 pounds heavier. Brad caught 32 passes for 396 yards and 2 touchdowns as a tight end for El Capitan last season. Billick said the Aztecs are planning to use Brad primarily at offensive tackle and possibly at tight end.

During Cisco Combs’ two years as a starter at Sweetwater, the Red Devils went 26-0 and won two San Diego Section 2-A championships. SDSU plans to try Combs (6-0, 190) as a strong safety.

“He’s very quick and aggressive, and was a leader at Sweetwater,” Billick said. “He is a special-team prospect.”
