San Diego Section Tennis : La Jolla and Bishop’s Win Semifinal Matches

SAN DIEGO — La Jolla and Bishop’s High Schools won semifinal matches Friday and will meet at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Morley Field for the San Diego Section 2-A girls’ tennis championship.
La Jolla (14-0), seeded first after winning the City Western League, won 14 of 15 sets in blanking No. 4-seed San Pasqual, 7-0, in a match held at Bishop’s. Second-seeded Bishop’s, the City Western runner-up, beat third-seeded Carlsbad, 6-1, at San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club.
Julie Coakley, seeded fourth in the Section singles tournament, paced La Jolla with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Nicole Main, the sixth seed in the Section event.
Leading Bishop’s was Shannon Crockett, the Section’s second-seeded singles player, who won, 6-1, 6-0.
In opening-round play in the 3-A division:
Mira Mesa 4, Monte Vista 3--A sweep by its doubles teams pushed fourth-seeded City Eastern League champion Mira Mesa (14-4) to a victory over Monte Vista, the Grossmont League runner-up, at Scripps Ranch Tennis Club.
Poway 7, Bonita Vista 0--The No. 2-seeded Titans ran their record to 16-3 with their sweep of Bonita Vista (14-5) at Poway. Carla Quaresma, seeded fifth in the Section singles tournament, led Poway with her 6-1, 6-3 decision over Lisa Takashima.
Valhalla 5, Patrick Henry 2--Katrina Crawford, favored to repeat as Section singles champion later this month, led third-seeded Valhalla (19-1) to victory over visiting Patrick Henry (10-3-1). Crawford beat Sue Hawke, 6-2, 6-1.
Torrey Pines 7, Coronado 0--The top-seeded Falcons blanked Coronado at Torrey Pines. The Falcons and Poway tied for the Palomar League championship.
