Red Sox Are Target of Racial Investigation

BOSTON — The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission will move forward with its investigation into a racial-discrimination complaint filed against the Boston Red Sox by former coach Tommy Harper, the American League club announced Tuesday night.
Harper, who is black, filed the complaint on Jan. 30, claiming he had been fired because he objected publicly to the team’s relationship with the Elks Club in Winter Haven, Fla., the team’s spring training site.
Harper said that the Elks Club, to which white players on the team are given courtesy membership passes, “maintains an official policy of racial discrimination.” He also contended that the Red Sox discriminate against blacks.”
