Hurricane Estelle sent 20-foot waves slamming onto the southeastern shore of Hawaii, destroying at least three homes and forcing the evacuation of as many as 250 others, officials said. “We would imagine there would be quite a bit of damage” to property, said Hawaii County civil defense spokesman Wendell Hatada. The hurricane, which developed off the coast of Mexico, was 235 miles southeast of Hilo and moving west at 23 m.p.h. It had sustained winds of 95 m.p.h., forecasters said.
