Placentia : Would-Be Candidate Loses Court Appeal

Gary R. Arnold, who is suing the City of Placentia because it will not allow him to run for city treasurer, lost part of his battle Friday when a court denied his appeal of an order forcing him to provide information about his residence.
Arnold had appealed an Orange County Superior Court judge’s decision that ordered him to give his deposition next week and produce documents proving where he lives. Arnold said that he should not be subjected to a deposition and called it “harassment” by the city. The state 4th District Court of Appeal denied the appeal.
“They have no right, they have absolutely no right to cross-examine people who are running for office,” Arnold said Friday.
Arnold, a critic of city government, said he was illegally prevented from filing for the office of city treasurer.
City officials told Arnold he could not run for the office because he listed 242 S. Bradford Ave., which is not a residential area, in his candidate’s papers.
Arnold said he lives at that address, which he also uses as an office for a group called Placentia Watch. The group keeps tabs on local officials and issues.
