Watsonville Canning & Frozen Food Co., target of a yearlong union strike, has reopened after a refinancing plan was completed. The plant opened 11 days after closing. The company reportedly offered area growers shares in Watsonville Canning in exchange for writing off overdue bills for produce already delivered to the plant. Company President Ron Trine said 500 production workers showed up on Monday and up to 900 are expected by the end of the week. But Teamsters officials said they are prepared to extend the strike by 1,000 members of Local 912 to the fields of the Salinas Valley and may enlist the help of the United Farm Workers union.
