GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Jeff Bentrim scored three touchdowns to break the NCAA Division II mark for career touchdowns and lead North Dakota State to a 62-13 victory over North Dakota Saturday in the North Central Conference.
Bentrim scored on runs of 7, 19 and 1 yards to give him a record-setting 64 career rushing touchdowns. That broke the mark of 63 set by Chicago Bear great Walter Payton at Jackson State from 1971 to 1974.
Bentrim’s record-setting touchdown came with 12:35 left in the game and gave North Dakota State a 55-6 lead. Teammates and fans swarmed onto the field to celebrate the score.
The victory gave North Dakota State its sixth straight conference title and ran its unbeaten string to 10 games this season. The Bison became the first team in league history to win nine games in conference play.
