Tyrell Biggs, a 1984 Olympic gold medalist in boxing, lost a bout on a Laguna Beach sidewalk when his 1986 Mercedes ran off the road and struck a tree, a parking meter and a light pole, police said Wednesday.
Biggs apparently leaned down to reach for something and steered the car off the road about 9 a.m. Tuesday, Police Sgt. Greg Bartz said. Biggs appeared to be uninjured and refused assistance at the scene, Bartz said, although he was reported to have been treated and released later at South Coast Medical Center.
Bartz said that there were no alcohol or drugs involved and that no charges will be filed against Biggs. The heavyweight boxer merely steered off the road, he said.
The accident happened in the 200 block of North Coast Highway.
“There was also very extensive damage to his new Mercedes,” said Bartz, who did not have an estimate of the damage. “His insurance company will be billed for damage to city property,” he said.
