PARIS — John McEnroe, his serve-and-volley game in a shambles on the slow clay of center court, was eliminated in the first round of the French Open today by Argentina’s Horacio de la Pena 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.
It marked the second consecutive grand slam tournament in which McEnroe has been a first-round loser. He lost to Paul Annacone in the opening round at the U.S. Open last August. “He came up with some great shots,” McEnroe said of De la Pena, “but I beat myself.”
