A baby born without most of its brain died at the Loma Linda University Medical Center without its organs being used for transplants, but doctors there were evaluating another anencephalic infant from Tennessee as a possible donor. Officials said the child who died, identified only as “Baby D,” did not meet the requirements of brain death within a seven-day limit. However, Hope Lovette Mount, born Friday in Knoxville, was accepted under a controversial Loma Linda program that sets guidelines for using anencephalic infants for organ harvesting. “Despite their legal option for abortion, (Hope’s) parents chose to continue pregnancy in hope of donating their baby’s heart and liver to other babies in need,” said hospital spokeswoman Anita Rockwell.
