John C. Monks, an associate dean of Northeastern University School of Law in Boston, has been named president of Western State University College of Law, school officials announced Tuesday.
Monks replaces William B. Lawless, who left the Fullerton college’s presidency recently to become dean of the American Judicial College in Reno.
Monks became associate dean at Northeastern in 1978. He entered the legal field after 15 years in marketing in New York City, according to Mimi Wald Bane of Western State’s information office.
Monks was vice president and marketing director at Ted Bates & Co., a major advertising agency, and then was vice president and national sales manager for a subsidiary of Time Inc.
He is a graduate of Fordham College and received his law degree from Northeastern. Monks is scheduled to assume the Western State presidency June 1. He will head both the Fullerton and San Diego campuses.
