Local News in Brief : Panel to Advise Fire Dept.

More than eight months after disbanding the Los Angeles County Fire Commission, the Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved formation of a panel to help oversee the Fire Department.
The board voted 4 to 1 to form a Technical Advisory Group to help advise Fire Chief John W. Englund in such areas as finance and administration. The board also voted 4 to 1 to form a Technical Reserve Corps, made up of private citizens, to offer expert assistance.
The supervisors will appoint members to the advisory group, which is expected to increase scrutiny over a department that has been criticized for not acting fast enough in uncovering a recent embezzlement case involving one of its employees.
The board dissolved the commission last September after critics complained that it had exceeded its authority by attempting to directly probe Fire Department policies.
