The condition of Orange County’s first heart transplant recipient was changed from “very critical” to “critical” Monday as he recuperated from a second transplant performed last Tuesday, UCI Medical Center officials said.
Scott Headding, a 26-year-old Huntington Beach musician, had first received the heart of a Marine Corps sergeant, who died after a fight with Cal State Fullerton football players outside a bar on April 7. Hospital officials said abnormally thick walls of the first donor heart’s left chamber caused the right chamber to fail.
“He’s doing better,” a UCI clinical coordinator said Monday of Headding.
