SACRAMENTO — Gov. George Deukmejian today nominated state Auditor General Thomas W. Hayes as his second choice to become state treasurer, filling the office left vacant by the death of Jesse M. Unruh 13 months ago. The governor’s first choice, U.S. Rep. Daniel E. Lungren of Long Beach, was rejected by the Legislature.
Hayes, 42, has been auditor general, heading a watchdog state agency, since 1979, when he was approved for the post by both the Senate and the Assembly. He is not affiliated with a political party but Deukmejian said Hayes intends to register as a Republican.
