LOCKERBIE, Scotland — Three teen-agers found half a million dollars in traveler’s checks in the hills near their home when they searched for wreckage of the crashed Pan American World Airways jet, police said Friday.
Stewart Dodd, 14, his 13-year-old brother, Robbie, and friend Alan Hyslop, 14, scoured the area around their home at Grange Tundergarth, 6 miles from Lockerbie on Thursday, the day after the Boeing 747 crashed, scattering wreckage over a wide area.
The boys came across an envelope containing the checks, said Forster Dodd, father of Stewart and Robbie.
“The checks were all tied together in a big brown envelope that was torn and damaged. They were all traveler’s checks--there were no dollar bills,” he said. “Some of the checks were for several thousand dollars. It seemed to be official mail--the package said something like ‘U.S. Mail Service’ and on it was written how much was inside--$547,000.”
The boys took the envelope to their home and gave it to police.
