IN BRIEF : Tarpley to Return to Drug Program

DALLAS — Dallas Mavericks forward Roy Tarpley was suspended indefinitely without pay today by NBA drug counselors for non-compliance with a follow-up program and so he could return to a substance abuse treatment center, the team said.
Tarpley informed his drug counselors Wednesday night in Phoenix that he wished to seek additional help. Tarpley, 24, left the team this morning to return to the Adult Substance Abuse Program treatment center in Van Nuys.
The Mavericks are scheduled to play Phoenix on Friday.
“The Mavericks continue to be committed to Roy Tarpley,” said General Manager Norm Sonju. “We trust that this time away from basketball will help him gain victory in this area that’s been so difficult for him.”
Tarpley returned to the Mavericks active roster Dec. 13 after missing 14 games with torn cartilage in his left knee. He averaged 14.8 points and 10.6 rebounds.
He won the 1988 NBA Sixth Man Award as the league’s top reserve.
