A sailor was indicted Wednesday by a federal grand jury on charges of receiving explosives and attempting to mail them in a cigarette package.
Dana James Hulse, 19, from Whitney Point, N.Y., will be arraigned in the next few days on the felony charges.
Hulse was to be transferred from Navy custody to the Metropolitan Correctional Center soon, said Assistant U.S. Atty. John Kraemer.
Kraemer said the explosive material was found in Hulse’s barracks. An empty cigarette package contained components that could explode if mixed with other chemicals possessed by Hulse, Kraemer said.
The prosecutor declined to name the intended victim.
The indictment alleges that Hulse received sulfuric acid and potassium chlorate in December, with the knowledge that such chemicals could cause an explosion that could kill a person or damage a building.
