Prop. 114 and Murder of Police Officers

In response to “Wonderful Sentiment, Wrong Solution,” editorial, May 9:
Even though I support the death penalty as an appropriate and just punishment for certain crimes, I found your editorial against Proposition 114 (which would make the murder of certain peace officers a capital crime) to be generally well-reasoned.
However, like so many of your columns regarding the death penalty, this one also begged the same question:
Suppose a man has killed a peace officer, and has been sentenced (as you propose) to life in prison without parole. Now let’s suppose that this man murders a prison guard. Since he has already received your ultimate sentence, how do you punish this crime?
