Havel Wins UNESCO Award for Freedom

PARIS — President Vaclav Havel of Czechoslovakia was awarded UNESCO’s $25,000 Simon Bolivar prize Wednesday for his “outstanding contribution to the freedom, independence and dignity of peoples.”
The prize, awarded every two years since 1983 by the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, is named after the liberator of South America.
