INFANT DEATHS: County experts on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome cannot explain the 71% increase in reported fatalities from 1988 to 1989 (above), when 53 children died. Males are at increased risk, experts say. Other factors: premature birth, low birth weight, multiple births and socioeconomic background. “I can’t say what could cause the increase,” said the coroner’s SIDS investigator.
