JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Two policemen were fatally shot and two were injured when they came under attack while searching homes in a violence-torn black township near Johannesburg, police said Friday.
The officers were hit by shotgun fire in the Phola Park squatter camp. Camp residents were reporting angry because police previously had detained the owner of a bar for not having the proper license.
There were no reports of arrests.
Phola Park, southeast of Johannesburg, has been the site of repeated clashes between rival black factions. Many residents support the African National Congress and have accused police of siding with the Zulu-based Inkatha Freedom Party. Police have denied showing favoritism.
