Spaying and Neutering of Pets Urged
I am writing in response to a story April 18 about a dog that made its way from Van Nuys to its home in Simi Valley in 12 days. After the dog survived heaven knows what on the road, the family has decided to keep it.
I can only hope that no one takes this as an example of responsible pet ownership. You quoted the owner as saying, as the dog broke into traffic, “Well, that’s the end of that. Thank God I got rid of the dog.” If that quotation is correct, it doesn’t sound like these people care for the dog, but will keep the dog now that it is a “celebrity.”
A responsible pet owner realizes that adopting or purchasing a pet is a commitment. Certainly, there are times when a dog must be placed in a new environment, but the attitude that our pets are disposable is all too common. It is the reason that the shelters are full and the reason that more than 13,000 dogs were put to death in our county last year.
Responsible pet ownership, including spaying and neutering of all pets, is the only answer.
