The University of San Diego men’s basketball team will play its first exhibition game at 7:30 tonight at the USD Sports Center, playing host to Marathon Oil, an AAU team of former college players.
The Toreros, coming off a 17-12 season, return three starters, led by All-West Coast Conference forward Kelvin Woods. They also feature senior point guard Wayman Strickland, a four-year letterman, and off-guard Michael Brown. Brooks Barnhard and Joe Temple, both sophomores, and Gylan Dottin, a junior, will be back in uniform after red-shirting last season. The newest face is 6-foot-7 sophomore Chris Grant, a junior college transfer.
Marathon Oil, which opened its collegiate tour with a 119-110 victory over Oral Roberts on Tuesday, is led by former Mater Dei High and Colorado State star forward Mike Mitchell.
SDSU HALL OF FAME
San Diego State has added five former athletes into its Hall of Fame. Included in the fourth-annual group of inductees are: Steve Copp (basketball, 1973-76), Chuck Courtney (golf, 1960-62), Tom Dahms (football, 1947-49), Monte Jackson (football, 1973-74) and Angela Rock (volleyball, 1981-84). Dahms will be inducted posthumously.
A formal induction ceremony will take place Nov. 16, before the Aztec-Brigham Young football game.
HOCKEY
The Gulls will give two-for-one admission to all fans who bring a can of food to tonight’s game against Kansas City at the Sports Arena. The canned goods will be donated to the San Diego Rescue Mission.
