COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Women Beat Antelope Valley

The Golden West College women’s volleyball team opened the defense of its state championship with a sweep of Antelope Valley in the first round of the Southern California Regionals Tuesday at Golden West.
Tracy Schriber had 11 kills and Brenda Irby and Karen Jacobson each had eight for the Rustlers (23-0), who won 15-7, 15-5, 15-7. Golden West, ranked No. 1 in the state, will play host to Los Angeles Pierce Tuesday. The winner qualifies for the state tournament, Dec. 6-8 at Cuesta College.
In another first-round volleyball match:
Orange Coast 3, Santa Monica 1--Stacy Bekemeyer had 12 kills and Kit Spath and Reiko Matsumoto each had 10 for the host Pirates (16-4), who will play the winner of the Ventura-College of the Desert match in the second round next Tuesday.
In the San Jacinto men’s basketball tournament:
Los Angeles Valley 66, Orange Coast 64--With the score tied, 64-64, and 25 seconds remaining Matt Manwarren rebounded an OCC miss and was fouled but missed both free throws. The Pirates (1-4) got the ball back again but turned it over and with eight seconds left, a Valley player was fouled and made both free throws. Jeff Porter scored 26 points for Orange Coast, which was eliminated from the tournament.
In nonconference women’s basketball:
Cypress-Glendale game postponed--The game was postponed when Cypress team went to Glendale and Glendale team went to Cypress. It will be made up Jan. 10 at Glendale.
